Runes are an extremely old form of writing and they were the sacred symbols of the Teutonic races. In the dim and distant past a complete system of magic and philosophy was built upon them.

This mysterious system of writing was handed down from shaman to pupil, by word-of- mouth , with the runes themselves being turned into mnemonics. This arcane knowledge was spoken as a means of protecting the knowledge from persons deemed unworthy.

The word Rune is itself derived from a root meaning that has a meaning of both 'power' and 'to whisper.'

With the inception of writing, the runic lore masters resisted creating any written documents on runic knowledge. Little remains of the ancient writings, except from a few Anglo-Saxon  and Scandinavian poems. Even here, the way the runes are used is not explained.

As these poems were written well into the Christian era, a blending of the two philosophies appears to have taken place, invalidating the original runic philosophy.

The poems themselves were full of deliberate errors and conundrums which these early races were very fond of.
