All gnomes are given a magical charm book when they reach ten years of age.  The book is tuned to the gnome using it, but as will all things the misuse of this book can create major problems. For this reason, all charm books are protected by various magical protection charms and devices to help prevent the book's unauthorised use.

The Magic Book's First Protection Charm
In Gorrin's case the first charm that has to be disabled creates a field that entirely encases the book. This energy field is only very slight but has the effect of making the book very slippery and almost impossible to pick up or hold. When in place the book will most likely be quickly dropped. The charm is disabled by a gnomish song.

The Magic Book's Second Protection Charm
The second method of protection is a an apparently simple lock, but the key required is actually Gorrin's amethyst ring. The crystal has a specific vibration that the lock is tuned to as well as requiring the amethyst stone to make direct contact with the lock mechanism.

The Magic Book's Third Protection Charm
Once the book is opened the pages are revealed to be blank. This subtle magic helps to prevent unauthorised reading of the magical charms contained within the book. The pages can only be revealed by a song that only Gorrin knows. Once he has song the sung in gnomish, the pages shimmer into view.

As soon as Gorrin closes and locks the book the various protection charms engage. Gorrin has only a few seconds to put the book away before he would find it extremely difficult to hold onto it without disabling the first charm again.
