All gnomes are given an amethyst ring when they reach ten years of age. The ring is tuned to the gnome wearing it. The amethyst stone resonates with a specific vibration which is activated by rubbing the ring and singing one of the ancient gnomish songs in the original language. The use of songs as musical keys to release the power within the ring triggers the crystal to release the vibration trapped within, which distorts light around the wearer of the ring. One strange effect is that any object that comes into contact with the wearer also adopts this effect and promptly disappears.

Of course as soon as the object is released by the wearer the distortion field around the object collapses and the object re-appears. During the fight with various members of the motorcycle gang, Gorrin accidentally released his runic staff and this promptly began to re-appear, however, as soon as he managed to grab hold of it again, the runic staff began to turn invisible. One of the gang members who had also grabbed hold of the staff, had the unfortunate experience of watching his arm begin to disappear and the energy field grew and this so startled him, he immediately let go of the staff. The result was that his arm reappeared.
