Gorrin belongs to a long line of Gnomes that stretch back thousands of years. Their society existed long before the rise of the age of man, and as man rose to prominence they retreated into relative obscurity.

Gnomes have been users of magic for thousands of years, but the use to which it was put was limited by the Gnomic Code. Magic is a powerful force that can be wielded and controlled like other forces than mankind is fond of using, such as electricity. It is formed by the interaction of the four main elements, Earth, Air, Fire and Water and although it is not inherently good or evil, it is the use to which it is put that denotes its colour.

The use of magic is always reflected back onto the user by the rule of three. If the deed is good the power and energy are good and the users spirit will ultimately benefit by a factor of three, but if the use is dark, then the penalty on the wielder is bad and again the magic users spirit is damaged by a factor of three.

Dark magic is easier to use than light or white magic, as it uses the baser instincts and emotions, such as lust, rage, envy, greed, malice, hate, whereas the white magic uses the better qualities, such as love, sympathy, empathy, mercy. But as with everything in life, things are rarely clear cut and there are always shades of grey. It is these areas that are difficult to thread your life path through, as Gorrin has frequently found out.

The magic that Gorrin uses taps into extra-dimensional properties and forces. The use of songs as musical keys to release these forces, play a key part of the magic. Gorrin's backpack as well as his runic staff, are key to Gorrin's magical tools. The common use of the light or white magic is evident in the way his runic staff behaves. In contrast, Horrin's staff swirls with darkness, reflecting the fact that he has used dark magic frequently.
